In 1990, the Indian Economy opened up to global trade markets. Since then, substantial changes have happened in the Indian Logistics industry. Initially, small and informal players operated, but gradually, with the arrival of global giants like Amazon, the entire industry transformed. The whole sector was boosted by implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017, further streamlining logistics operations. It promoted the consolidation of warehouses and reduced interstate barriers.
The logistics sector has undergone a 360-degree transformation owing to the Digital India scheme. Blockchain technology and Artificial Intelligence in Logistics make the process transparent, efficient, and user-friendly. In 2024, India ranks 38th out of 139 countries on the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI). It’s a significant player in the global logistics sector, driving economic growth and jobs.

2019-2020: It is valued at $170 billion with an emphasis on supply chain management owing to the National Logistics Policy and PM Gati Shakti initiative.
2020-2021: COVID-19 boosted demand further, especially by raising its valuation to $190 billion. Adoption of digital solutions surged as per CII, 2023.
2021-2022: According to IBEF, 2023, the industry crossed $200 billion post-pandemic recovery, emphasising more sustainability and green logistics.
2022-2024: Estimations of hitting $225 billion in 2024, driven by booming e-commerce demands of Tier2 and Tier3 cities as per India Shipping News, 2024.
